Does S & K grow the sod or is it purchased from a third party?

S & K Sod grows its own sod. The S & K Sod farm in Kenansville, Florida covers 1200 acres and is currently growing seven varieties of grasses.

Is S & K sod weed free?

S & K Sod strives to grow the most healthy and weed free grass available. Due to the nature of turf grasses it is impossible to grow "weed less" sod. Undesirable plants develop immunity to the herbicides designed to eliminate them. Our certified grasses which include: Jamur Zoysia and Celebration Bermuda and the S & K Sod varieties of St. Augustine Floratam, St. Augustine Bitter Blue, St. Augustine Captiva and Tifway 419 Bermuda are virtually weed less, but in an extremely rare instance a foreign plant species may be found in these varieties. The Argentine Bahia may contain weeds and/or animal dung as it is pasture grass and not subject to fertilizer, irrigation, insecticides or herbicides. Growing Bahia in this manner ensures a naturally vital, hearty sod that strives in the Central Florida climate.

Do I need to kill off my existing grass before installing sod?

S & K recommends exterminating all existing grass and weeds with a glyphosate herbicide. All remnants of prior grasses and weeds should be removed before new sod is placed. Seeds, spores, and existing root systems in the soil will compete for the nutrients and space required to grow. After the existing weeds and grass has been killed the best practice is to remove the dead plants with a sod cutter, then thoroughly rake the area to ensure the new sod has the most suitable environment to promote establishment and continued growth. It is vital for anyone considering purchasing sod to understand that sod cannot be placed on top of existing grass, sod, turf, weeds or untreated soil and be expected to flourish. To lay sod in this manner handicaps the sod's ability to reach its full potential and violates the S & K Sod Warranty.

How thick is a piece of sod?

A piece of sod has about one inch of soil and root zone and the grass height varies from 1 to 3 inches depending upon the variety.

What should I consider when choosing the sod best suited for my area?

The amount of shade, tree cover, hours of sunlight, method of irrigation, home owners association bylaws, amount of time and money you would like to invest and use of the area. Please read the S & K Sod Products Page for more information on this topic.

Does S & K sod have to be cut with a specific type of mower?

No. All S & K sod types can be cut with a sharp rotary mower.

Does it matter how high or low I cut my lawn?

Yes. Each grass should be maintained at its recommended mowing height. For example: Floratam and Bitter Blue should be cut at three to four inches. Cutting grass to short will compromise the health of your turf.

What is the best time to irrigate my lawn?

Sodded lawns should be irrigated during the early morning hours that coincide with the dew falling (usually from 4:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. with these times being adjusted with daylight savings time). This helps to minimize evaporation, promote conservation and reduce the conditions favorable to fungus growth.

What are the signs of drought in my lawn?

Signs of drought in your lawn may include, but are not limited to a change to a gray-green color, folded leaf blades and footprints or tire prints remain for an extended period of time.
