Turf Establishment

When establishing sod it is important to remember:
  • Sod life on pallets during summer months is less than 48 hours
  • Add moisture to the area directly before the time to lay sod
  • Sod pieces should be fitted together tightly
  • Do not let the sod dry out until it is fully established

Watering

-Proper water management after planting is crucial for survival

-Water the new grass twice a day (early morning and late afternoon) for 30 minutes per zone for two weeks (take into consideration natural rain fall). When establishing any grass, it is important to irrigate more frequently than usual until a viable root system is established, turf demands for irrigation are greater.

·        Zoysia water requirements for establishment: twice per day with 1/4 – ½ inch of water until the sod is held fast (usually 10-14 days) to the soil by new roots. After that water as needed.

·        Bermuda water requirements for establishment: twice per with ¼ inch of water until the sod is held fast to the soil by roots (usually two to three weeks)

Mowing

Proper mowing height and frequency are the best methods of controlling many weeds in newly established lawns. Begin mowing as soon as the grass reaches 30% greater than the desired height. (Always mow grass at recommended height. Mowing grass to short scalping will make the grass more susceptible to other stresses such as insect, disease, or weed pressure). Higher mowing heights promote deeper, more extensive root system that enables the grass to better withstand drought stress. Most importantly always cut grass with sharp blades for best results.

Things to know:

  • Mole crickets can severely damage grass

  • Difficult to mow due to tough leaves and stems

  •  Not well adapted to soils with high pH

  • Yellowing leaf could be the result of iron deficiency

Mowing Height: During active growth, mow every 7-14 days at 3-4 inches

Watering Requirements: Watering is required when blades begin to fold up, to actually wilt, or turn blue gray in color or when footprints remain visible after on the grass. Apply ½ to ¾ inch of water per application.

**It is important not to mow Bahia grass at lower heights, as that will reduce the tolerance of the grass to heat, drought, and other stresses. It will also suppress root growth.
